for Mobil
 For years, Mobil
considered its sponsorship of the Cotton Bowl Football Classic a strictly public relations
activity. When corporate management decided to harness the event to sell Mobil gasoline
and Hefty bags and cups, it sought help to develop a promotion.
Mobil and Hefty insisted that the promotion plan also support the nine
other companies co-sponsoring the bowl event. After a week of meetings with co-sponsors,
the final structure of the promotion evolved - a pre-selected winner sweepstakes with
prizes contributed by the major sponsors.
Heftys regional FSI kicked it off with cents-off coupons and an
in-ad scratch-off game card featuring instant win and collect and win prizes. Additional
game pieces were packed inside regionally distributed products and were available at local
offices, service stations and automobile showrooms. During the promotion period. Mobil and
Hefty experienced a 7% spike in regional sales; other participants reported similar bumps
in sales and traffic.
In addition to coordinating programs such as Mobil's, our planning,
