The way we made Lederle Laboratories’ consumer healthcare products coupons stand out from FSI coupon clutter was to empower them with a kind of "emotional value" – a value beyond their face values.

"The Healthy Family of the 90s Sweepstakes," a drawing for a complete home gym, whirlpool and sauna, was a proven tactic that directed extra attention to the vitamin and calcium supplement FSI ad. To win, health-conscious readers were directed to write their names and addresses on one (or more) cents-off coupons and to redeem them on their store purchases.

While the Official Rules provided a non-purchase alternative, an estimated 65% of consumers mistakenly believed that they had to purchase in order to win. Coupon redemption increased 25% above the brands’ norm. The $30,000 invested in sweepstakes prizes and administration paid-off in incremental sales.
